Aerial Cinematography

Bring us the idea. Lensaloft develops the aerial shots and takes care of everything required to capture them.

A clear path to the shot

You bring the idea. We take care of the complexity.

Some clients arrive with a detailed storyboard. Others have a message, a place or a feeling they need to convey. Lensaloft can turn either into a practical shot list, then manage the aviation, equipment and production planning needed to bring it to screen. You stay focused on the film and the finished footage.

Behind the footage

The groundwork should be invisible.

Every successful aerial shot rests on decisions the audience never sees. Lensaloft handles airspace and CASA requirements, ATC and stakeholder coordination, pilot briefings, insurance, risk management, equipment preparation and aircraft rigging. Interstate and international transport is planned as part of the production, with weather and light monitored closely so the capture window serves the look of the film.

From brief to shot list

We translate the message or creative direction into shots that can be planned, captured and edited.

One point of responsibility

Creative, aviation, technical and logistical requirements are managed as one production.

Ready for the day

Aircraft, crew, equipment, permissions, weather windows and contingencies are prepared before capture.

Selected applications

Built for the way the footage will be used.

Technical capability

If the shot needs a solution that does not exist, we build it.

Lensaloft has worked with a broad range of cinema cameras, stabilised systems, lenses, aircraft and specialist platforms. Proven equipment is used where it fits the brief. When it does not, we design, manufacture and test the rig or supporting equipment needed to make the shot possible.

That development work stays behind the scenes. The client receives a considered plan, a properly managed shoot and footage that works in the edit.

01

Brief to shot list

A finished shot list is useful, but it is not required. We can begin with the message or feeling the film needs to convey and develop the aerial sequence from there.

  • Concept, storyboard and shot-list development
  • Translation of the message into practical aerial shots
  • Sequence, movement and focal-length planning
  • Timing, light and edit requirements
02

Aviation & production

The regulatory and operational work is managed as part of the production, without adding another layer for the client to coordinate.

  • Airspace, CASA and operational approvals
  • ATC and stakeholder coordination
  • Insurance, risk management and pilot briefings
  • Aircraft, crew, routes and operating-area planning
03

Camera systems & engineering

The aircraft, camera, lens and stabilised system are selected for the shot. When standard equipment cannot deliver it, Lensaloft develops and tests a purpose-built solution.

  • Commercial drone and helicopter cinematography
  • 4K, 8K and 6-axis stabilised camera systems
  • Custom equipment design, manufacture and testing
  • Aircraft rigging and interstate or international transport
04

Weather, capture & delivery

Weather is reviewed across aviation and forecasting sources to find the light, visibility and atmosphere the shot needs, then monitored through the production window.

  • Weather, light and operating-window assessment
  • Real-time movement, framing and lens direction
  • Live streaming and wireless HD video feeds
  • Raw, graded or colour-managed masters for the edit

Start with the idea

Tell us what the film needs to say.

You do not need to solve the aerial sequence before making contact. Share the message, location, schedule and intended use. Andrew can develop the shot list and take care of the planning, permissions, people and equipment needed to capture it in Melbourne, across Australia or overseas.
